The Angel of the West Window
Published in Paperback by Dedalus Ltd (June, 2000)
Authors: Gustav Meyrink and Mike Mitchell
Average review score:

The Angel at the West Window
A man inherits the collected papers of his deceased cousin and is suddenly plagued with nightmares and flashbacks of the past and of the life of his ancestor, John Dee. Strange people start visiting him: the mysterious Lipotin, the seductive Assia Chotokalungin, both demanding of him his most valuable heirloom, the legendary spear head of Hoel Dhat, of which he has no knowledge of possession. Full of alchemistic symbols, the plot spans the time from the reign of Elizabeth I. to early 20th century. The atmosphere is one of increasing angst, the images heavily tinted with the shadiest of grays. Highly recommended!

Un librazo, de lo mejor

Class Acts: How Good Manners Create Good Relationships and Good Relationships Create Good Business
Published in Hardcover by M Evans & Co (January, 2003)
Authors: Mary Mitchell and Letitia Baldrige
Average review score:

Establishing of a good and profitable business climate
Class Acts by business etiquette authority and consultant Mary Mitchell is a straightforward, "reader friendly" guide to using good manners, etiquette, and positive relationships to improve business efficiency, profitability, and the lowering of daily stress levels while on the job. From the importance of accountability, forgiveness, and trustworthiness; to improving communication skills; to handling disagreement in the most effective manner (always disagree in private if possible, and carefully watch one's tone of voice while disapproving); to coping with the challenges of cyberspace; to knowing better than to pursue a workplace romance (or if one must, to pursue it with caution and close awareness of the other party's feelings), Class Acts emphasizes that it is the creation of good and enduring relationships which, in the end, are fundamental to the establishing of a good and profitable business climate.

Class Acts -- A Boardroom to Bedroom Must Read
Class Acts is an essential book for today's personal and professional environment. The strength of the book comes from it's applicability to one's life lived in a 24/7 world. The lines between professional acts and personal acts are less clearly defined as one realizes that a "whole life" standard to behavior is the only way to conduct oneself. It is precisely this understanding of all "actions" and their impact on daily life, both on the individual and organizational level, that makes this book a boardroom to bedroom must read.

As the CEO of ULiveandLearn, an educational company, we have been involved in developing programs that offer training and continuing education programs. Often, the benchmark programs are the ones that ignite support across a broad group of users, from corporate managers to educators to community-based organizations.

We are looking forward to helping bring Class Acts live through programs that integrate the essentials of the book with case studies and programs for corporations and organizations.

The opportunity to create and sustain an environment of good manners, good relationships and good business benefits us all. Mary Mitchell clearly understands the power of her message and it's long reaching effects on everyone who cares enough to be a Class Act.

Long Overdue!
At last, someone who "gets it!" Mary Mitchell eloquently makes the case that respectful, ethical, balanced business conduct is not simply "do-gooder" window-dressing but an issue that strikes deep at the bottom line -- via the relationships created with employees, employers, customers, vendors, colleagues and, oh yes, investors. Take THAT, Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing, Adelphia, and all the rest! This should be required reading for everyone in business.

The Diary of Lucy Blue
Published in Paperback by Essence Publishing (February, 2002)
Author: Janice Mitchell
Average review score:

Heartwarming and Tearful
This book is a must for any animal lover regardless of whether you are involved in rescue or just want to be a better friend to the animals that we are jointly responsible to and for.

Lucy Blue's story is an excellent story about the resilence of our canine friends when shown love and understanding. You will cry at the trauma Lucy must have gone through and the inevitable set-backs as she tried to understand that in Janice's home she was for the first time being given unconditional acceptance for who she was at any given time. You will get mad at how humans can do what was done to Lucy Blue and other puppy mill dogs. You will smile and be enlightened by the progress Lucy makes, and even though you probably don't know her be proud of the wonderful and beautiful Sheltie she blossoms into.

A Candle in the Night....
Thinking that this was going to be 'just another dog book', I sat down in my oversized chair with this little book and a brimming cup of General Foods coffee, ready to do my duty to the friend who had recommended 'The Diary of Lucy Blue'.

Before long, a vivid image of a tattered, shattered puppy-mill sheltie-girl began to form. Without meaning to or realizing how quickly my full attention had been captured, I found myself painfully waiting and hoping with the author through months of Lucy's numb avoidance of all efforts to reach her; and wildly celebrating the tiny victories that signaled Lucy's faint attempts to reach back to a single helping hand. She was a frail little candle, no doubt, and flicker by glow, her light got a little brighter. Lucy decided to give Love a chance and it bought her out of a slavery that kills the soul right out of the body. The writing is excellent, the story is sadly and wonderfully true. This book is a Healing unto itself.

I have been dumbfounded ever since about what the words 'puppy-mill-dog' really mean. God Bless the Beasts and Children for they have No Voice and No Choice. And please, while You are at blessing things, please Bless this woman who went into the night by herself to bring back a beautiful, bright heart.
She does it all the time.

The Diary of Lucy Blue
This little book follows the saga of Lucy Blue, puppy mill survivor, to Lucy Blue beloved pet with all the steps, heartaches and triumphs Lucy makes in between.
This book will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It's a book that truly touches the heart.

The Dogs of Capitalism: Origins
Published in Hardcover by Twenty First Century Logic (March, 1988)
Author: Mitchell Jones
Average review score:

Logic Lovers' Dream
Brilliantly written, easy to understand, the author covers wide array of topics, includint dog breeding, history, law, etc.
I read this book in two days, couldn't really put it down...

Book 2?
This is one of the best books I've read on dogs *OR* capitalism. Very well written, insightful, reasonable, great for argument and discussion. I'm saddened by the idea that I will probably never get to meet one of these ultimate dogs of capitalism. I very much wish that there was a "Book 2."

This is a good introduction to capitalism, and libertarian ethics, too.

Dogs of Capitalism
This is a terrific book, original and thought-provoking. After reading it, I immediately ordered 3 more copies for gifts.

It is so good and so full of information new to me that I plan to reread it immediately, because I know there is a lot I missed. It would be enjoyable to take turns reading it aloud with someone intelligent and discussing it.

Too many books today contain only enough information to merit an article (just as many articles contain only enough information to merit a paragraph), the rest being padding; this book is meaty.

This book is suitable for anyone bright who enjoys thinking and who is interested in dogs, capitalism, history, economics, or politics, age 7 to 107. It also contains little-known facts and insights on the issue of animal rights.

Memories of Mayberry: A Nostalgic Look at Andy Griffith's Hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina
Published in Hardcover by Dynamic Living Press (January, 2002)
Author: Jewell Mitchell Kutzer
Average review score:

Home in Mayberry
I recently moved to Mount Airy, the fabled Mayberry, and wanted a resource to help me learn a little bit about the "lore" behind this community. This was an excellent resource and a fun read at that. For me, it helped bring to life not only the ties of my new hometown to the TV show, but also to learn a little bit of history about this community.

Memories of Mayberry
My wife just purchased this book for me and it was very interesting, especially being in the first person from Jewell. Brings back so many memories from my wife's family. I will be sending it to my 92 year old mother-in-law to read and I know she will enjoy it. Thanks, Jewell, good talking with you. Bill Tarpley

American Heartland Nostalgia
Thousands and thousands of us faithfully watched the television classic, The Andy Griffith Show and its sequel, Mayberry RFD. We followed Sheriff Taylor, Barney, Aunt Bea, and the rest through 249 episodes from 1960 through 1968. From 1968 through 1971, we were treated to 78 episodes of Mayberry RFD. Watching these shows today is a heartwarming nostalgic experience. Why, there's even an active The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club!

Mayberry has its roots firmly and deeply planted in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, a small town nestled in the mountains between Winston-Salem and the Virginia state line. Andy Griffith is celebrated there, along with all the traditions of hometown America, during community festivals and other events.

Jewell Kutzer grew up in Mayberry, just a couple of years behind Andy Griffith. She shares many of the memories that inspired Griffith to create Mayberry and the character of the popular television show. In Memories of Mayberry, she shares her experiences growing up in this now-famous small town. It's a pleasant, comfortable book to read, like having a conversation with a friend. Mt. Airy was a microcosm of life in a changing country, in a changing world. Lives were interwoven with the lives of others in the community. People were real, they were caring neighbors, they led simpler lives in the 1940s and 1950s. This book takes the reader back to those uncomplicated times.

Did I say uncomplicated? Well, compared to today's complex lifestyles. But for Jewell, growing up in a small town, life brought one adventure after another. Her tales of yesteryear are referenced to episodes in The Andy Griffith Show that relate to the memories. Readers will gain a deeper appreciation of how Griffith made the show so real in the earlier days of television.

Want a trip back to our roots? To the values on which our country was built? Pick up a copy of Memories of Mayberry to open your mind and heart to our wonderful past, not just in Mt. Airy, but in hundreds of other small towns across the land. Definitely designed for readers over 40 (we were there), but offers valuable insights for younger readers, too.

The 15-Minute Gourmet : Vegetarian
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1999)
Author: Paulette Mitchell
Average review score:

Variety
Becoming a vegetarian is simply a matter of creating vegetarian habits, and this book makes it surprisingly easy, by offering a wide variety of recipes that really are exceptionally delicious, and remarkably easy to prepare. Paulette Mitchell really has won my respect, by creating a variety of very healthy meat-free meals, that are full of flavor, and richly satisfying. The appetizers are very tasty, the soups are savory, the salads are simply delicious, the entrees are mouth watering, and the desserts, honestly... will make your knees buckle! I've had this book for a couple of years now, and it's the bedrock of my dinner menu. I've got a few other vegetarian cookbooks, but "The 15-Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian" is the one I keep going back to for the best recipes, night after night. Bon Appetite!

Just What I Was Looking For!!!
When I decided to go Vegan a couple of weeks ago, I was looking for a cookbook that I could use regularly, even on busy weeknights. This book delivered. I'm having a hard time trying to decide what to cook because everything looks amazing. This, as the author points out, is not a vegan cookbook, but many of the recipes are easily convertable. I highly recommend this if you want good food fast!

When she says 15 minutes, she means it
I have a VAST collection of vegetarian cookbooks. Recent changes in my lifestyle and schedule mandated that I learn to cook faster meals, so I ordered several books promising fast meals. This one delivers. While some of the recipes take a bit longer than 15 mintues, few take more than 30, and much of that time is cooking time, not preparation. Most of the ingredients are common, and a few, such as tahini and miso are less common, but not rare. 15 Minute Gourmet: Vegetarian is divided into food groups such as soups, sauces, entrees, desserts, and appetizers. She includes some "basics" on nutrition and good health, as well as suggestions for balancing a healthy vegetarian diet. There are several complete menu suggetions and many recipes include a suggestion for a recipe that would make a good companion. There are even good ideas for setting up an organized kitchen to save MORE time. These are not Standard Amercian Diet foods made faster. These are very nutritious recipes with some ethnic diversity. Quite impressive for a collection that all can be assembled in moments, and many are even low in fat. For those who are curious, some recipes include...quick tomato sauces, pesto, orange-tahini sauce, cheesy vegetable spread, peanut dip, asian stew, quick pea soup, moroccan chickpea soup, fresh croutons, strawberry and blueberry soups, peach vinaigrette (and many others), thai cucumber salad, pasta with herbed ricotta and pine nuts, sweet and sour tofu, vegetable curry, nut burgers, vanilla poached pears, and chocolate dipped pineapple with raspberry sauce. In addition to all of these wonderful features, the layout is simple to read, directions are numbered and divided by steps (less confusing) and there are quite a number of full-page color photographs of the recipes. I highly recommend this book to those who are afraid that "quick" vegetarian food also has to mean "bland". Paulette, I commend you.

Creative Evolution
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1998)
Authors: Henri Bergson and Arthur Mitchell
Average review score:

the light shining between Heraclitus and Bohm
Henri Bergson's seminal ``Creative Evolution'' starts off with the flowing movement so prevalent in his philosophy of the organism, one idea flows into the next in a smooth undivided motion. Not only does Bergson explain his work with analogies and examples supported by the biology of the time, thereby distancing himself from the purely intellectual pursuit of most philosohpy, trapped in the world of the mind, but he demonstrates his thought in the very way of exposition he uses throughout the book. One feels his thought is produced like a Mozart symphony, all at once with no corrections needed. This aptly demonstrates the idea of duration and time he proposes in this book. His influence is profound in thinkers such as David Bohm and Alfred North Whitehead which so to speak ``run with it'' in the parlance of baseball. This is a book worth reading twice for its rich display of creativity and also to reread sections not followed the first time. One does feel however that at times the flow is interrupted by disturbances in his mode of thinking leading to disjointed reading. Nonetheless, not only does he open a whole new way of thought free of dualism and the old patterns of mechanism, but he also expalins the reason for mechanistic thought itself.

From Miller to Ibsen
I first came across Ibsen's monumental work when reading 'Tropic of Capricorn' by Henry Miller. Despite my complete lack of evolutionary and biological knowledge, I found Ibsen's eschatology mind blowing. Several times I was forced to leave the book for days in order to fully contemplate the philosophical ramifications of his insights. From this great stride forward into the fringes of human understanding Ibsen states: 'A conduct that is truly our own, on the contrary, is that of a will which does not try to counterfeit intellect, and which, remaining itself - that is to say, evolving - ripens gradually into acts which the intellect will be able to resolve indefinitely into intelligible elements without ever reaching its goal. The free act is incommensurable with the idea, and its "rationality" must be defined by this very incommensurability, which admits the discovery of much intelligibility within it as we will. Such is the character of our own evolution; and such also, without doubt, that of the evolution of life." No one, despite their educational backgrounds or lack thereof, should feel intimidated by the possibility of transcending one's very own intellect.

the opus of the advocate of vitality....
Despite Lord Russell's criticism that "intuition works best in bats, bees, and Bergson," in this work Bergson not only finishes the uprooting of the Western and Platonic disembodied intellect (a deconstruction taken only so far by Kant), he presents us with the spectacle of unbridled life creatively shaping, not only its world, but itself in accord with its own telos: the need for eyesight creating the eye, so to speak. Difficult in places but a treasure, although one could wish he gave more credit to Nietzsche's obviously great impact on him. Jungians would do well to peruse Bergson too.

This book is so great. It is well written and interesting. I found that I could not put it down; I was glued to it. Karnes is a very great person, and his skill and morals shine through. Keep reading through the first half, it's worth it.
